  • Course Description

    Journalism is a dynamic course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of news writing, reporting, editing, and media production. Students will learn the skills necessary to produce professional-quality content for both print and digital platforms. Emphasis will be placed on journalistic ethics, accuracy, clarity, creativity, and responsibility in media. This course also encourages students to explore multimedia storytelling through photography, design, and broadcasting.

    Instructional Philosophy

    The journalism classroom is a space where students learn by doing. Instruction will emphasize authentic, hands-on experiences that mirror real-world journalism. Students will be encouraged to think critically, act responsibly, and develop their own voices as communicators. Collaboration, integrity, and creativity will be at the heart of every project, with students working both independently and as part of a team.

    Major Course Goals

    • Understand and apply the principles of journalistic writing and reporting.
    • Demonstrate mastery of grammar, style, and journalistic formats (news, features, opinion, etc.).
    • Conduct effective interviews and gather information ethically and accurately.
    • Apply AP style to journalistic writing.
    • Analyze and evaluate media with an understanding of journalistic ethics.
    • Use photography, layout, and design tools to produce professional publications.
    • Collaborate effectively to meet deadlines and produce cohesive content.
