    Course Description

    Biology is a semester-long laboratory science course based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence. Students will explore fundamental biological principles, including cellular structure and function, genetics, heredity, evolution, classification, and ecological interactions.
    This course emphasizes inquiry-based learning with frequent hands-on labs, investigations, and data analysis. Instructional methods include group activities, direct instruction, class discussions, digital learning via Canvas, and independent work. Students will develop scientific thinking, reasoning, and lab safety skills.
    Note: This course is an EOCT (End-of-Course Test) class. The final exam will be a Georgia Milestones Biology EOC.

    Course Content & Standards

    Science Skills:
    Students will:
    - Use science process skills in labs and field investigations
    - Analyze and interpret data
    - Follow all safety procedures
    - Reference scientific texts and sources

    Major Biology Content Standards:
    SB1 – Structure and function in living cells
    SB2 – Expression of genetic information
    SB3 – Inheritance of traits
    SB4 – Organization of living systems
    SB5 – Ecosystem interactions and energy flow

    Materials Required                                                             Suggested Materials:

     

    - Writing implement (pen or pencil)
    - Three-ring binder and paper (to remain in class)
    - Charged Chromebook or laptop
    - 3.5 mm wired headphones for laptop

    (S)- Colored pencils or fine-point markers
    (S)- Personal hand sanitizer, tissues, etc

     

     

     

    Grading Policy

    Grades will be posted in Canvas and categorized as follows:

    Minor Grades – 60%
    Examples: quizzes, labs, and graded assignments to monitor progress.
    Major Grades – 40%
    Examples: unit tests, research papers, and major projects.

    Grade repair will be available as each module is completed. Academic dishonesty will result in a zero and possible administrative referral. Work must be redone to earn any credit.

     

    Classroom Conduct & Expectations

    All students are expected to behave in a respectful and mature manner to support learning. Disruptive behavior will result in the following steps:

    1st Offense: Verbal warning
    2nd Offense: Individual counseling
    3rd Offense: Parent contact
    4th Offense: Office referral

    **Serious behavior violations will result in immediate referral.**

    Classroom Rules:
    1. Be on time and prepared to learn with materials ready.
    2. Show respect to all people and property.
       - No grooming or application of body sprays, perfumes, lotion, etc.
    3. No food or drink (only water in a clear container is allowed).
    4. Follow all lab safety procedures at all times. Violations may result in a zero.
    5. Phones, tablets, or Bluetooth devices are not allowed.
    6. All county and school rules apply, including the dress code.

    Attendance Policy

    Students must be present to succeed. All missed assignments will be posted in Canvas and are expected to be submitted within 5 days of return. Make-up work can only be discussed during independent class time or after school.
    Students should schedule time with Ms. Rogers for help.

    3) Chromebook (charged and ready for use)

    4) 2 inch, 3 ring binder - preferably green (to be kept in class)

    5) Pencil Pouch (to be left in class binder)
